Slum-B-Q 4

We'll start talking about bands involved next week, but let me just give you all a little taste as to what will be going down for Slum-B-Q 4 on Saturday, September 8th.

We're basically going to utilize every inch around Carabar on Parsons – this is gonna be a seriously badass party.

Stretched across 4 parking lots and the bar itself we’ll have shenanigans going on all day including: 15 bands and 6 solo artists staggered on 2 outdoor stages and the Carabar stage. Over the main parking lot we’ll have a tent with beer sales benefiting charity. We’re going to do an honest-to-goodness pig roast (+ veggie options) coupled with a full-scale, free-to-enter PIG basketball tournament with cash prizes. Down at the Chop Chop Gallery we’re gonna roll out an art bazaar with upwards of 20-25 artists selling their “reasonably priced” artworks. Chop Chop will also be host to some cool performance art shit.

All of this for the totally affordable ticket price of FREE!

Next week we’ll get in to further specifics. In the meantime, we will obviously be needing volunteers out the ying yang. Compensation will be in the form of beer tokens, super good times and other potential goodies. All shifts needed – partner up with friends to maximize the fun quotient. Please, if you want to help this unique community event be all that it can be send emails to: staff@newdarkages.net

Get totally excited, I know I am!

Whatever Happened To... Wade Blogs?

Hey look friends... we have a couple of brand new shiny blogs.

<----------- They're over there.

Brooke LaValley's Lost and Found will grapple with the country's increasing obsession with frozen banana violence and cotton candy warfare. Not to mention, she’ll be posting pictures of friends and foes alike, as well as, ruminations on the human condition and more.

Reporting live from China will be The Progressive Mexican. He’ll dazzle us "in real-time" with his unique observations on the Far East and beyond.

Bookmark'em and give'em feedback so that they know you love'em!

As always, thanks for reading and tell a friend.

Banned In The U.S.A.?

BREAKING NEWS FROM THE DESK OF DAN WATSON:

VOTE YES ON PROPOSITION 2: Kick “Bernardi” off of The New Dark Ages!!

If you randomly string together phrases from his various message board posts, you get such offensive statements as this:

“I'm such an asshole..but Chinese people are DUMB!!! what do you expect the movie sucks.. but not really your money made a jackass on him Sorry it just isn't the front right side of it wasn't died.”

For this and other general examples of his jerk-ness, I think that he should be banned from the board!! Vote for it!!

On The Video Internet Embed... Learning Knowledge Is Power!

Our very own Matt Carter made a very good point today. It's summer and what does that mean boys and girls!? That's right... STAY IN SCHOOL!

Which brings me to my next point: Our very own Samuel Sam Craighead could use a little pumping up as he is still in school and I think he is seriously considering dropping out and joining the cast of Broadway's new hit musical, Xanadu. I wish I were joking.

Sometimes you just need your friends to be there for you when you are deciding between ordering a pizza for the rest of your life or doing your homework and getting good grades. We're all there (or here) for you Sam! This is an intervention.

On The Boober Toober... Kung Fu Grip.

BREAKING NEWS! We just received an excellent tip from a really reliable source: former Cincinnati Reds third baseman Chris Sabo (he just so happens to be an avid reader of The New Dark Ages) who says that Spike TV is showing a back-to-back-to-back-to-back kung fu movie extravaganza TONIGHT!!

The line-up looks like this:

Kung Fu Hustle
Shaolin Soccer
Hero
Iron Monkey

Former Cincinnati Reds third baseman Chris Sabo had this to say: "I urge any fan of Totally Excellent Kung Fu Movies to tune in to Spike TV tonight."

Expect a full review of all the movies by The NDA's own Sam Craighead sometime later as he is reviewing all of the movies of all of the time.

Need we say more?

Covenigma: Its Got A Good Taste!

I will start this piece by disclosing the fact that it will probably be even more boring to read if you have never seen the movie that is American Movie .

You see it all started a couple of weeks ago when my friend Sean and I went on this little road trip to Milwaukee to witness the 10th anniversary screening of Mark Borchardt’s Coven. The event was called Covenigma and it also featured a viewing of the aforementioned legendary cult classic American Movie as well as a few bands, some fire-twirlers and homemade BBQ (of which we didn’t eat). (Not because it looked gross or anything, but because we weren’t hungry). (For the record, the food looked delicious and everyone was raving about how good it was).

Anyway, I guess I haven’t written anything about this trip because it was just such an overwhelmingly surreal experience that it’s been hard for me to sit down and put it into words.

First off, on the way to Milwaukee we found this place called the Cheese Castle:

I’ve never seen so much cheese in my entire life. It truly was a castle of cheese. They also had statues of knights in full battle armor and plenty of summer sausage to go around (if you know what I mean). The sign on top of the place was massive and I really wanted a t-shirt with that logo on it, but all they had were these really lame shirts with the name of the joint embroidered on it for like $25.

Once we got to Milwaukee we made our way to the Hilton downtown where we got a great deal for a room through the Pricewire.gov. The weird thing is Sean had only been to Milwaukee once before in his life and it was for a wedding like ten years ago or something. Turns out he stayed at the very same hotel. Needless to say, this previous knowledge came in real handy when it was time to find the bar downstairs.

The day of Covenigma was filled with keen anticipation:

We were eager to meet all of our favorite American Movie characters live and in the flesh, nearly thirteen years after they made the movie.

We rolled into the parking lot of the Times Theatre and within thirty seconds we were greeted heartily by a cigar-wielding Mark Borchardt who thanked us for coming like he had known us for years. Awesome!

As we turned the corner we saw Mike Schank flanked by his new wife and Mark’s graying excitable Swedish mother. Wow! It was so insane to see that these people actually existed.

The theatre was great. It had that olde worlde charme and it was really smart how they had ropes going from the front of the place around to the side parking lot so you could legally bring your beer from the inside to enjoy some of the sunshine and parking lot activities going on outside.

Here was the schedule:

One of the definite highlights of the day included a blind-folded acoustic guitar performance by Mike Schank. In this picture he is being hectored by the trouble-maker Kenny Keen:

At one point after losing the sash he invited his wife to join in on a song he said they had recently written together. Here’s a bit of that:

Afterwards we got some pictures with Mike:

He kept telling us this story about how the legendary six-string virtuoso Steve Vai had sent him an autographed picture once with a request that Mike send one of himself in return. But, Mike said he never did because he didn’t have any pictures of himself except the ones that his Mom had in her photo album at home, but he didn’t think he should take one of those.

Inside the Fire Sirens were neon hoop dancing to Square Wave’s "Pagan Whore". This is when my buzz really started to kick in and boy was it perfect timing. Check it out:

And just when things couldn’t get any more fantastic along came the pastel-drenched enigma that is Sir Robert Richard Jorge. He was still as vibrant and charming as ever as displayed in this photo I took with him inside the theatre (the slight haze you see in the air is from all the smoke machines(!!) they had going during the band):

Then, there was this really amazingly awkward Coven “Q & A” which just kind of turned into Mike telling unrelated stories:

Some place in Milwaukee made this cake with Mark Borchardt’s likeness on top. Towards the end of the evening (after the fire spinners) we all dove in. It was decent.

Then, after everyone filed out of the theatre, we made one final round of goodbyes which yielded this picture with Mark -- after which I obviously slipped him a copy of the Buffalo Corpse CD with our blessing to use the music in any of his upcoming projects.

The rest of the weekend we spent exploring the various nooks, crannies, record stores, restaurants and bars about town. And just to bookend the trip properly we stopped at the Cheese Castle on our way back home.

We've received word that Covenigma 2 will take place around Halloween. Who's in?

I think it pretty much goes without saying that I'm in like Flint. We can bring along a picture of Mike so that he can autograph it and send it to Steve Vai. We should make it a point to not eat burritos as big as our heads an hour before going to the actual event, so that we have some room in our bellies for the delicious barbecue fixin's. I'll start growing out my mutten chops right now, so that they'll be every bit as nappy as they were this past time we went. And maybe we'll run into that drunk girl who said that the chops make me look like a guy from Fall Out Boy. And besides, I need to go back to Stuckey's to exchange that t-shirt that's too small for me for one that's too big for me. I'm already pretty stoked.
