The Other Blog Meat

So, you guys might find this interesting? We have a page or web page or site that we can go to in order to access our website “statistics”. For example, I can see how many “hits” The New Dark Ages has received from Latvia in the month of April (answer: 512). Who knew? Also, I can see how many people have visited the NDA (10,205 unique users) and how many of those people bookmarked the site (968). I can clearly see that 80.6% of NDA readers are pimpin’ on Windows and 57.1% are viewing the site via MS Internet Explorer (28.2% are on Firefox). These numbers are all very entertaining and informative at the same time.

But, perhaps the most telling statistical of all is the Top 10 Keyphrase Search list. It’s given to me in a top ten list and you might find the results quite shocking!

This Top Ten list tells me what “phrases” people used in various search engines (ex. Aks Jeeves) in order to find The New Dark Ages. What is fascinating are the results. And here they are…

#9: “sean ewing”

#7: “futurama”

#4: “new dark age”

#3: “grey goose pear”

#2: “newdarkages.net”

AND #1… no shit… I am not kidding…

#1: “bacon”

I don’t remember writing anything about bacon, ever, but apparently 5.1% of the traffic we received via search engines found us that way. I don’t drink Grey Goose Pear, either. Don’t touch the swill. But, that’s not the point.

The deal is who doesn’t love bacon!? This in turn means, who doesn’t love The New Dark Ages!? Come to think of it, that might be a great question for Aks Jeeves.

So, in conclusion, if you have any statistically speaking questions please feel free to forward them my way via the comment section below and I will answer them in the comments section below.

OK, thanks! And thanks for makin’ bacon #1!!

Equation for the Perfect Bacon Sandwich

You say you spent a lot of time in the kitchen coming up with the "perfect" something - omelet? salad? macaroni and cheese?

But you have nothing, and I mean nothing, on researchers at Leeds University, who spent over 1,000 hours testing 700 variations of the bacon butty, aka a bacon sandwich.

The study, which was commissioned by the Danish Bacon and Food Council, is not a joke. How could it be, when the scientists actually derived an equation? If you're wondering what it takes to make the perfect bacon sandwich, it's N = C + {fb(cm) · fb(tc)} + fb(Ts) + fc · ta.

I've been meaning to figure out the perfect recipe for Korean BBQ ribs (galbee). Looks like I have a lot of hours to put in.

That can probably be summed up the the fact that sean ewing likes to watch futurama while drinking grey goose pear and eating bacon.

What an asshole.

Friday Night Flights

It’s a testament to our fair city (Columbus, Ohio)’s musical scenery that we have so many FANtastic bands playing on tomorrows holiest of Danish holidays: 4/20.

You have the free show at Carabar with The Rackets, Rosehips, Second State Butchers and Nakamura Lock. Also, you have the dual album release show at Bourbon Street with The Cheater Slicks, Shel Shag and Grafton. Both, high-quality endeavors to say the least. However, we hope you’ll use your CSI navigational system and/or your Yahoo!/Ask Mr. Jeevies Mapsqwest to find a way to swing by those shows while also finding time to hit up our especially IMPORTANT ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY PARTY and BAKE-OFFF!! At Little Brother’s Bar!!!!!

Here is the schedule of our show so that you can load it in your Blueberry now (for safe and convenient maneuvering):

9:30 – 10:00 >> Guinea Worms
10:15 – 10:45 >> Beard of Stars
11:00 – 11:30 >> Terribly Empty Pockets
11:45 – 12:15 >> Houseguest
12:30 - ??? >> The Lindsay

Bring your baked goodies or eat other people’s baked goodies for FREE!!!!!!!!!!

Also, bring an extra buck or two for Mother Earth as this is a benefit for Ye Olde Lass.

Also, we have some in-between band shenanigans planned for you that I unfortunately cannot divulge at this time. There has to be some mystery, right?

So, tomorrow night, what’s the plan again!? That’s right. Split yourself into at least three separate pieces and make sure the one that likes sweets and dancin’ comes to Little Brother’s.

See you tomorrow night! Tell yer friends!!!!

P.S. Doors at 8PM :: 18+ :: $5

They Were Fun While They Lasted

Very few TV shows actually hold my attention these days, but it seems as though the ones that do always end up being cancelled in short order. Maybe I’m the problem?

After airing only four episodes and sending the remaining two episodes to die on Saturday nights, NBC has announced the cancellation of Andy Richter’s Andy Barker P.I. The show wasn’t always a scream, but I thought the premise was great, the style unique, and it had room to grow if it would have been given the chance. Tony Hale (formerly of Arrested Development) was brilliant in his video store geek co-star role, but it appears as though Richter is just doomed to failure on network TV. It’s too bad; I kinda like the big lug.

Another show that I was really starting to enjoy -- The Winner, which was produced by Seth MacFarlane and starred ex-The Daily Show correspondent, Rob Corddry -- has seemingly bit the dust. Although there hasn’t been any "official" word yet from FOX, how do you say, their silence speaks volumes. It’s too bad, because this was a show that was as charming as it was wacky and it had some genuinely funny performances by the cast all-around. They could have ditched the obnoxious laugh track, but even that grew on me in an ironic way. I’ll still keep my fingers crossed for this one a bit longer -- and if you want to check out the show for yourself, FOX still has all six episodes streaming on their website.

Last, but not least, there was this excellent show that was airing this time last year that I had been meaning to say something about for a long time now. I guess I felt like if I didn’t acknowledge that it disappeared that it might just magically pop-up on my TV one day. The short-lived situational comedy was called Sons & Daughters and it played on ABC for about two months last Spring. Do you remember it? The show centered around an extended family of dysfunctional dim-wits with just a few "normal" people sprinkled in for good measure -- namely Fred Goss who played the lead character as a neurotic do-gooder to awkward perfection. He spent most episodes obsessing over his own silly insecurities while simultaneously attempting to fix all of his family’s various problems. It sort of felt like Woody Allen directing a Christopher Guest movie. Or maybe it was the other way around? Anyway, the partly-scripted, partly-improvisational style of the program followed the Curb Your Enthusiasm model for comedic success. They just kind of forgot the success part. Still, the show was heartfelt and funny and it’s a real travesty that it never got a shot at season two as the axe dropped in late April 2006 after ten episodes aired, leaving one unaired episode. A rumored DVD is being held up by music licensing issues. This is one show I’d love to see return, ala The Family Guy. But, there’s no reason to think that it will as Goss wrote on a MySpace blog that "Sons & Daughters will not be picked up on another network."

I guess it’s true what the Billy Joel says: "Only the good die young."

the winner, really? besides the obnoxious laugh track, the jokes and writing were just sort of generic.

James said...

Ok if you want to have a show make it less then 10 Episodes.. Put Andy Richter as the star, guaranteed. That guy just sucks, he needs a leader, like Conan.
And the Winner, come on, it was funnier when it was called "Get A Life", deserved to die.
What I am really pissed about is NBC killing "The Black Donnelly's" so quickly. Show had the grit of an HBO series and was just starting to get interesting. Oh well.
Did the kill "The Knights of Prosperity" too? I love Jimmy the Cab Driver but the man just has no success as an actor. But the idea of that show was just retarded.

19 April, 2007 10:58
b.miller said...

Admittedly, I am a big Rob Corddry fan, but I guess the two biggest reasons I liked The Winner were:

A) It sort of reminded me of the halcyon days of 80’s family sitcoms.

B) I thought the kid in the show and Corddry had a real funny chemistry together.

SO, SUE ME!!!!!!

P.S. I never saw The Black Donnelly's and yes, The Knights of Prosperity is dead. Sorry.

Whatever happened to... William Zabka?

Well??

1 Comments:

*clearing throat* William (aka Billy) Zabka started his career in Karate Kid (obvs) and had smallish roles in around 15 other feature films before starting his film-making career. last I checked he made some Polish small film that screened at a handful of film festivals. And he hasn't aged too badly - especially when you compare him to the hottie that played 'Dutch' in the Karate Kid. (Real name Chad McQueen) He looks like ASS now. But *sigh* I'd prolly still do him. (I AM a chick by the way).

On The Cineplex... Grindhouse.

So, who is going to see Grindhouse tonight? I’m hitting up the 8PM show at Lennox. Got my ticket yesterday. Yes, I am a nerd. Deal with it!

Also, did you hear how Rose McGowan broke up the sixteen-year marriage of director Robert Rodriguez and wife Elizabeth Avellan during the filming of Planet Terror? Turns out Rodriguez really likes machine guns up his pooper. True story! It's a scene in the movie (whoops! spoiler alert!) Gossipy gossip!! I’m no Liz Smith-Casablanca, that’s for sure.

Anyway, the point is, who’s going??

1 Comments:

b.miller said...

As a whole, I give it a solid 87%. While the movie Rodriguez directed was dirtier with scratches and jump cuts and a little more of what I expected going in, I think I probably enjoyed Tarantino's movie a touch more even though it was put together a little nicer. Kurt Russell put it over the top. I really hope this creates a new trend of movies going back to 70's-style over-the-top sensationalism -- it's hilarious.

On The Boober Toober... Human Giant.

It’s been a real long while since MTV has produced anything actually worth watching, but if the buzz surrounding tonight’s series premiere of Human Giant has any basis in reality, this experimental comedy might just buck that sad trend. The comedians that make-up Human Giant (Aziz Ansari, Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer and Jason Woliner) are notorious for their absurdist viewpoints. Their anarchic, low-budget appeal is forged through ultra-brief bits and skits that mock greasy Ari Gold types (''Shutterbugs'') and pompous magicians (''Illusionators''). But, the gag from tonight’s show that has everyone talking is when Ansari is forced to walk around Manhattan blasting the ''shittiest mixtape ever'' from a suitcase-size boom box, 1983-style. Set those DVR’s for 10:30PM SHARP and we'll talk more about this later.

Book of the Week 13/52

Boomsday

by Christopher Buckley
(Twelve, 2007)

Missy Schwartz for Entertainment Weekly
As might be expected from a novel by the author of Thank You for Smoking, Boomsday spares no one from the sting of satire — not the U.S. government, not the Catholic Church, not the French. Even little old-folks homes get kicked around a bit. The story takes place in a not-so-distant future in which the U.S. is engaged in six wars, the economy is ''flatter'n a pancake'' due to a $1.1 trillion deficit, and citizens under age 35 face tax hikes of 30 percent to pay for the retirement of 77 million baby boomers. For 29-year-old PR maven-cum-blogger Cassandra Devine, this last point is unacceptable. Why should she and her peers (a.k.a. ''Generation W,'' short for whatever) shoulder the burden of that ''self-indulgent, pampered'' group of ''Wrinklies''? Fed up, she devises a plan: Get opportunistic Sen. Randy Jepperson to sponsor a bill urging boomers to commit suicide — voluntarily ''transition'' themselves, in PR speak — at age 70. Soon,
