In Theatres This Weekend

Alright! Finally a weekend full of new movies that actually looks pretty great. I’m very interested to see Christopher Nolan’s turn-of-the-century magician’s tale, The Prestige, with Christian Bale, Scarlett Johansson, Hugh Jackman and David Bowie. Also, Running with Scissors looks pretty stylish and smart (and sort of like a better executed Squid and the Whale). Annette Bening is already getting Oscar buzz for her turn in this story of an eccentric (read: unstable) family and a highly perceptive kid trapped in the middle of it all. But, this week’s true gem looks to be Sofia Coppola’s (eye/ear/mind candy) Marie Antoinette. In this her follow-up to the highly-acclaimed Lost in Translation, Coppola looks to interpret the 18th century French monarchy through Kirsten Dunst as Marie Antoinette, who became the Queen of France and later a toxic symbol for the wanton extravagance of the era’s noble, ultimately inciting the French Revolution.

Marie Antoinette also stars Jason Schwartzman, Asia Argento, Molly Shannon, Marianne Faithfull and (fucking!) Rip Torn as Louis XV!!

Also out this Friday: Candy, Requiem, Sleeping Dogs Lie, Flags of Our Fathers and Flicka.
