Make no mistake the Broken Lizard fellas sure know how to open a movie with a bang. The first ten minutes of Super Troopers might be some of the funniest material ever put to celluloid. And within the first ten minutes of their newest comedic brew, Beerfest, we are witness to an equally amusing German underground party-drinking scene filled with tons of screwball characters and a wonderful bit of silly, 80’s-style gratuitous nudity. But where their last two flicks, the aforementioned Troopers and Club Dread, started strong but struggled to maintain a high level of hilarity throughout, Beerfest keeps you giggling and guzzling (if you sneak beers in like we did) from start to finish. I am willing to admit the beer buzz might have aided the comedy slightly, but it’s the consistency of this one that really satisfies. It’s filled with plenty of their patented over-the-top shtick including a somewhat nauseating moment with an old lady essentially giving a bratwurst a handjob, but it’s balanced out with far stronger subtle humor than past efforts. I really appreciate their throwback style of comedy to a time when movies like Porky’s and Revenge of the Nerds reigned supreme. Bottom line, this is my favorite film of theirs yet; grab a few cold ones and go check it out.
