In Theatres This Weekend
It’s My Big Fat Jewish Bar Mitzvah! The story of a 13-year-old boy who uses his upcoming bar mitzvah to reconcile the strained relationship between his father and grandfather. I don’t get that from the trailer but whatever. This is the kind of ethno-centric family-fare that usually goes over big in the summer with both the people they are actually portraying and old white folks who want to connect with people who don’t look like them in the air conditioned safety of their local multiplex. Everyone wins! Regardless, Jeremy Piven's usually pretty funny and with this project Garry Marshall’s son Scott gets to direct his second feature film. His first you ask? None other than 2000’s Spin Cycle which starred Howie Mandel. Anyone who runs with Howie Mandel I will support to the death.
Keeping Up with the Steins stars Piven, Daryl Sabara, Jami Gertz, Daryl Hannah, Cheryl Hines and the aforementioned elder Marshall (Mork & Mindy’s creator).
Other noteworthy flicks opening this weekend: Russian Dolls, Giuliani Time, Wah-Wah, Just My Luck (or lack thereof perhaps?) and of course, the über-hyped Poseidon. I'd rather be sailing.
